All lead shot weights listed above are for standard lead shot sizes. The weights are listed in grains. This lead shot weight chart is accurate for most lead pellet manufacturers – as the nominal size is used across the industry. For precise shotshell reloading, always use lead pellets with the same nominal pellet size and weight.
To find out how much a buckshot load weighs, simply multiply the weight of one pellet by the total pellets in the load. For example, if you wanted to know how much does 27 pellets of #4 buckshot weigh, you would multiply 27 pellets by 20.7 grains. This means 27 pellets of #4 buckshot weighs 558.9 grains or 1.27 ounces.
Note: #4 through #2 buckshot have the same naming scheme as smaller #4 through #2 pellets typically used for bird hunting (lead, steel, heavier than lead shot). These pellets do not have identical OD (outside diameters) and cannot be used interchangeably. Be aware that buckshot pellets are larger than small game pellets, and the smallest buckshot pellet (#4), is larger than F-shot steel.
Keep in mind, although all lead pellets range between 0.19 and 0.70 grains, not all shot manufacturers use the same processes, and therefore some weights can be slightly different. When exact pellet measurements are important, please check with the manufacturer for dimensional information. See this chart for info on buckshot pellet counts per ounce.
