Best Choke Tube Wrenches

Below are the top 3 best choke wrenches that provide exceptional results for quickly changing choke tubes in the field or before the hunt.

1) Carlson’s Sporting Clays Speed Wrench

Carlson’s universal choke tube wrench works with most extended and flush choke tubes. It clamps the choke tube internally which then can be loosened. The speed wrench handle allows you to give it extra torque for stubborn chokes. This is the top pick.

What are the benefits of using a choke wrench?

Choke tube wrenches allow you to easily remove a choke tube from a shotgun without damaging the barrel, choke, or barrel threads. Standard choke tube wrenches are equipped with notches that fit into groves on the top of the choke tube which pressure can then be applied to twist the choke free. Friction wrenches expand inside the choke tube to create a tight grip on the inner walls of the tube which can then by turning, back out a choke.

Being able to easily remove choke tubes can be handy if you are hunting and need to switch choke tubes or if you are patterning shotgun loads and switching between choke tubes frequently. Additionally, if your choke tube is stuck, wrenches can provide the torque needed to break it free.

What should you look for when choosing a choke wrench for a shotgun?

Choke wrench selection is often guided by the brand of shotgun and the type of choke system installed on the gun itself. Remington, Benelli, and Browning all have different choke tube groove patterns and diameters that require specialized choke tube wrenches.

Universal and friction choke tubes look to solve the problem of various choke systems by offering a tool that can be used on a wide range of shotgun brands. If you have a large selection of shotguns that require choke removal, it often makes more sense to use a universal wrench instead of a brand specific wrench.

Can a Quarter Work as a Choke Tube Wrench?

Yes, a quarter fits perfectly for most Browning, Remington, and Winchester choke tube systems. If you are in a pinch, it is worth a try, but it is far from ideal. First, since a quarter is round, the edges do not fit squarely into the groves on a choke tube. This reduces the torque being applied to break the choke tube free. If you have a stuck choke tube, this method is not the best approach and you will likely just be damaging the quarter.

The quarter choke wrench works best when a choke tube is well oiled and a little tighter than hand tight. Even so, a choke wrench is almost always a better alternative.

Are universal choke tube wrenches the best?

Universal choke tube wrenches fit most choke tubes, but not all. Most shotguns come with a basic choke tube wrench when purchased which is designed for the choke system. If you have lost your factory choke wrench, a universal wrench is your best bet unless it is a specialty choke. For example, the Briley speed wrench will not work with Briley special thinwall choke tubes or the Titanium or Plasma Briley chokes.

What should you look for with Heavy Duty Choke Wrenches?

Heavy duty choke wrenches are those that grip good and extra torque can be applied. Friction choke wrenches don’t work the best for stuck choke tubes. A wrench that can bite into the notches on top of the choke will create more torque than wrenches that fit inside the tube and grab onto the side wall of the choke.

Are choke tube wrench sockets really needed?

Several choke tubes wrenches are offered from Midway and Brownells that attached to a socket. These are designed for choke tubes that are hopelessly stuck and not for every day use. They do provide an option for maximum torque to be applied.

DIY Choke Tube Wrenches are not really worth the effort

Choke tube wrenches are cheap and designed specifically to not cause damage to the choke tube. It’s not really worth the time and effort to make your own choke tube wrench unless you are in a pickle or bored.
