Why do you need a choke tube wrench?
Choke tube wrenches help remove choke tubes from shotgun barrels by freeing and then unscrewing the choke. Handles on the choke wrenches are an efficient way to spin the choke tube quickly since they require numerous turns due to long thread designs.
Flush choke tubes sit inside the barrel of a shotgun and can’t be manipulated easily. Choke tube wrenches allow through friction or the notches on the top of the choke, the ability to back the choke out without damaging it or the shotgun barrel.
Universal Choke tube wrenches for shotguns
Universal choke tube wrenches are designed to be used with most common types of choke tubes. It is inserted into the choke tube and expands to grip the inner walls. This inside pressure allows the wrench to bite and provide enough torque to back out the choke.
Choke tube wrenches marked universal do not work with every choke tube. Read the description carefully to find out if you choke tube is included. For example, the Briley speed wrench works with most Briley choke tube, but not all.
Heavy Duty Choke tube wrenches
Struck choke tubes require more torque to break the choke free and that is where heavy duty choke wrenches come into play. Heavy duty choke tube wrenches seat into the notches of a choke tube and will not lose contact with the choke under high torque conditions.
Universal friction chokes are not heavy-duty wrenches. They will slip if the choke tube is corroded, or the threads are damaged. If you have a stuck choke tube, lean towards a heavy-duty choke tube wrench first.
Do homemade choke tube wrenches really work?
Homemade choke tube wrenches do work in limited capacity. Currency coins are typically used as a DIY choke tube wrench in a pinch, but only for chokes that are well lubricated and are removed routinely.
Coins and other objects can damage the choke tube if used improperly.
