Choke tube markings are a series of lines, notches, letters, or numbers that help identify the size of a choke tube. The letters INV are usually written on the outside walls of the choke tube, and it can be confusing if you haven’t seen it before.
INV stands for INVECTOR. It designates the choke tube system it’s compatible with and in this case INV fits all shotguns that accept Standard Invector chokes. This includes certain Browning, Mossberg, and Winchester shotguns.
Standard Invector chokes can be used in 20 gauge, 12 gauge, and 10 gauge shotguns and are available in many different diameters. If you see “INV” written on a choke tube, you can be sure it will be compatible with shotguns that use the Standard Invector choke system.

What does INV mean on a choke tube?
Choke tube letters designate what diameter or brand a choke tube is and INV is included in these designations. INV stands for Standard Invector and is the choke system, installed in many Browning, Winchester, and Mossberg shotguns.
Some chokes can be labeled as INV+ and this means Invector Plus. Invector plus chokes will not fit shotguns designed for Standard Invector chokes. Invector will be listed as INV, Browning INV, or Invector. INV chokes are not interchangeable with Invector Plus choke tubes. See this guide for how to tell the difference between Standard Invector vs Invector Plus.

There are over 30 different choke tube markings used for choke identification. Below are the most common markings. Please click the links below to see what each choke tube marking means.
What is an Invector choke tube?
An Invector choke tube is a Browning choke system available for some models of 12, 10, 16, 20, and 28 gauge Browning shotguns, as well as some .410 bore shotgun models. Standard Invector chokes are available in wide range of options, including flush, extended, ported and non-ported versions.
Standard Invector chokes are compatible with certain Winchester, Browning, & Mossberg shotguns. In addition to Invector, Browning also makes Invector Plus and Invector DS style chokes that are not interchangeable with Invector choke tubes.
Invector Choke Tubes
Invector choke tubes are standard for early model Browning shotguns, but they also fit certain Winchester and Mossberg’s. Threads are located at the bottom of the choke and are 1.5-inches long.
Standard Invector vs Invector Plus
Standard Invector chokes are interchangeable on 12, 16 and 28 gauge, and .410 bore Citori 725, Citori, Cynergy and Gold shotgun models. Invector chokes are shorter than similar Invector Plus chokes.
Invector Plus chokes are interchangeable with 12 and 20 gauge Maxus, Winchester SX2, SX3, SX4 & SXP, Gold Hunter, Silver, and White Lightning.
Bottom Line: INV Means Standard Invector
INV stands for Standard Invector. Invector choke tubes are compatible with Browning’s Invector choke system. They are available in ported, non-ported, flush, and extended designs. Invector chokes are interchangeable with certain Winchester and Mossberg shotguns.
Browning Invector Plus and Invector DS choke tubes are not compatible with the standard Invector choke systems. See this guide for how to tell the difference between Standard Invector vs Invector Plus chokes.
