↬ Use this choke interchange guide to find out which choke fits your shotgun.

All choke tubes are NOT interchangeable between different shotguns. Each brand of shotgun has a specific choke system installed on it, with threaded connections that are only compatible with similar chokes. While there are choke systems that interchange between some brands, such as Standard Invector with Browning and Mossberg, Invector Plus with Browning and Winchester, and Mobil with Benelli and Beretta, many will only fit the shotguns they were designed for.
The choke systems that are interchangeable and the shotgun models they interchange with are listed below. It’s important before buying a choke to know which choke system is installed on your gun.

More
Data in this list is compiled from shotgun specs available from manufacturers and available in product descriptions on Amazon, factory, and store inventories. Always inspect the markings on the barrel of your shotgun to identify the correct choke tube system before using any choke. Additionally, most chokes will list the choke system it should be used for on the outside wall of the cylinder. If unsure about shotgun/choke compatibility or fitment, consult the manufacturer’s website for more info. Choke tubes without any markings may be difficult to identify unless thread sizes or the choke construction are unique. Bore sizing tools can be used to determine choke diameter, thread size, and thread thickness to compare to manufacturer specs. For example, chokes such as Crio Plus have a unique 3/4-inch separation from where the threads and end of barrel meet.

Other Interchangeable Choke Types
This choke tube interchange guide is designed to identify the compatibility of the most popular choke systems found in widely used shotguns for hunting waterfowl and other game. Many specialized choke tube systems exist beyond what’s listed in this guide.
For obscure shotgun models, brands, or tactical models, please consult the manufacturers website for choke interchange info or to identify which choke a shotgun uses. Many shotguns have choke systems that don’t interchange with any other brand (Fabarm, Retay, Yildiz).
It’s also important to research your shotgun model by the year it was produced, as certain long produced models can have multiple choke systems depending on the year it was manufactured. This designation is often listed as “newer” or “older” to signify when the choke system switch was made.
Additionally, choke systems are constantly being improved and revised. For example, Browning has three different choke systems, Beretta has four, and Remington has two. To put it in perspective, there are over 15 different choke tube systems in use today across all brands of shotguns. This can lead to a lot of confusion as to which chokes fit a certain shotgun. Always verify the shotgun model, barrel markings, and choke tube markings to confirm compatibility.

Browning Choke Tubes
Browning choke tubes are manufactured by Browning and consist of several different types of choke tube systems. The most popular are Browning Standard Invector, Invector Plus +, and Invector-DS chokes.
The Standard Invector choke tubes are the oldest choke tube system for Browning shotguns. It’s likely that if your shotgun was made in the early 1990’s or earlier that this is the type of choke tube you have. These chokes only fit Browning shotguns marked “Invector” for 10 gauge, 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 28 gauge, and .410 bore.
The Invector Plus + choke tubes were made from the late 1990’s into 2020. These types of chokes can only be installed in shotguns marked “Invector Plus” or “Invector +”. Invector Plus choke tubes were made for 20 gauge and 12 gauge Browning shotguns only, except for certain Citori guns. Invector Plus chokes are considerably longer than Standard Invector chokes.
Invector-DS chokes are the latest design installed on Browning shotguns. Many Browning shotguns manufactured after 2016 will have the Invector-DS choke system installed. These chokes will only fit Browning shotguns marked “Invector-DS” on the barrel. DS chokes are longer than Invector Plus+ chokes and the threads on DS chokes are on the muzzle end.

Other Choke Tube Brands
The choke brands listed above are the most popular in the industry. Between them all, they offer choke sizes for just about every game animal or hunting scenario with multiple diameters to choose from. But other choke brands do exist, with some being proprietary. This means the chokes will not interchange with other shotguns or may be hard to find if you lose the factory chokes. So, do your research before you buy.
With the latest popularity of tactical shotguns, many new manufacturers are including choke tubes that aren’t well known or even listed. It’s best to reach out to the manufacturer themselves to identify what chokes they are installing and what choke system they are compatible with. Unfortunately, this isn’t always clear, but it will give you an idea of what after-market chokes will be available should you want to upgrade in the future.
Are All Choke Tubes Interchangeable?
Not all choke tubes are interchangeable between different shotguns. Many shotgun manufacturers produce their own choke tubes, which leads to variables in choke design across the industry. The resulting effects are chokes that only fit a limited number of shotgun models from that manufacturer.
These differences in choke construction include thread design/spacing, thread placement, choke diameter, choke length, and choke thickness. Minor differences in any of these factors can cause a choke tube not to fit a certain shotgun.
Choke Tube Interchangeability
When it comes to interchangeability, the short answer is that it depends on the brand of the shotgun. Some brands, such as Beretta and Benelli, have proprietary choke systems that are not compatible with other brands. However, there are also universal choke system manufacturers, such as Tru-Lock, that produce chokes designed to fit a variety of different shotguns.
It’s also important to note that even within the same brand, not all models may be compatible with one another. A good example of this are the three choke systems for Beretta shotguns: Optima, Optima Plus, and Optima HP that are not interchangeable. So, it’s always a good idea to check with the manufacturer or consult the owner’s manual to ensure that the choke tubes you are considering will work with your specific shotgun model.
In terms of choke brands, some popular options include Truglo, Patternmaster, and Carlson’s. Each of these brands offers a variety of different choke tubes for different types of hunting, such as improved cylinder for close-range shots and extra-full for long-range shots.
How to Identify if a Choke Tube is Interchangeable
The first step to determining if a choke tube is interchangeable is to examine your shotgun model, barrel markings, and choke markings to confirm compatibility. Each of these three factors must correspond to one another for a choke tube to be compatible.
Shotgun models and barrel markings indicate the brand of the shotgun, gauge of the barrel, and choke system. You will find these markings on most shotguns at the base of the barrel where it meets the receiver. All newer shotguns will have this information available from the factory for a quick reference guide.
Older shotguns and those that have had a choke system installed by a gunsmith, may not have any markings at all. It’s best to consult the manufacturers website or a competent gunsmith to determine if a choke tube is interchangeable under these conditions.
Most choke tubes contain markings on the outer wall of the cylinder that indicate the brand of choke, choke system it fits, and diameter of the choke. This data can then be compared to the specs of the shotgun to determine if it’s capable of interchanging with different choke systems or brands. Once this data is compiled, look for your choke on the choke tube interchange guide listed above. If you don’t see your choke brand or system listed, it’s likely that it isn’t one that interchanges.

Choke Tube Interchange FAQ
What is the order of choke tubes?
The order of choke tubes from open to tight are cylinder, skeet, improved cylinder, light modified, modified, improved modified, light full, full, extra full, and turkey. These choke sizes are universally accepted and considered the standard for determining the size of a choke.
The order of choke tubes is nothing more than placement based on size. Typically the choke order starts with the most open choke, cylinder, and increases in increments of thousandths of an inch to the next tightest choke. In this case, the next choke in order would be skeet.
It’s important not to focus too much on the order of these 10 choke sizes, but instead by the three chokes that make up the majority of them. They are cylinder, modified, and full. Most of the choke sizes are some variation of these three diameters, just with subtle size differences. Keying in on words like improved, light, and extra are helpful clues to identifying where a choke should be placed in the order.

What guns are Mobil chokes compatible with?
Mobil chokes are compatible certain Benelli and Beretta shotguns, most notably with the Benelli Montefeltro (pre-2007), Benelli Legacy (2011+), Benelli Legacy Sport, Nova & Super Nova, Benelli SBE I, M-1, M-3, M-4, World Class, Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon I, II, III, and V, 687 EELL Diamond Pigeon, Beretta A-300 Outlander, and Beretta 390.
Mobil chokes do not interchange with any other shotguns other than the Benelli and Beretta models listed above. The Mobil choke system was the original choke system prior to the mid-2000’s, being used by both Beretta and Benelli. Mobil chokes are usually marked with “Mobil”, “PB”, ‘ST”, or “MCS”.

Are shotgun choke tubes interchangeable?
Yes, some shotgun choke tubes are interchangeable. Interchangeable choke tubes have two defining characteristics, they must be threaded, and they must meet the choke system specifications. These two features allow for, 1) the choke tube to be installed correctly, and 2) confirms that the choke tube is made with the tolerances needed to safely to operate.
Interchangeable choke tubes are chokes that can be installed on multiple different brands and models of shotguns with compatible choke systems. Their compatibility makes them extremely versatile.
For example, Standard Invector chokes are the most popular interchangeable choke tubes available. Not only do they fit certain Browning shotguns, they also fit several Winchester and Mossberg firearms. The ability to interchange chokes allows for the use of the same chokes on many different firearms.
For more, see this guide that outlines the most popular interchangeable chokes.
Which choke tube is tighter?
A turkey choke is tighter than a full choke. When it comes to determining choke tightness, a smaller diameter designates a tighter choke. In this case, a full choke is considered a tight choke, but it’s not tighter than an extra-full or even a turkey choke.
For a 12 gauge fixed choke shotgun, a full choke measures 0.685”. The same shotgun with extra full or a turkey choke measures 0.680” and 0.675”, respectively. Turkey chokes are the tightest choke tube available for all shotguns. They are designed to keep patterns tight at long ranges with lead and heavier than lead loads.
When determining if a choke tube is tighter, consult the order of chokes, from open to tight. They are cylinder, skeet, improved cylinder, light modified, modified, improved modified, light full, full, extra full, and turkey. A turkey choke is tighter than all other choke tubes available.
See this guide for more on selecting the best turkey choke.
Bottom Line: Not all Choke Tubes are Interchangeable
It’s important to understand that there are different types of chokes and choke systems. The most common choke types are screw-in chokes, which are threaded and screwed into the muzzle of the shotgun, and fixed chokes, which are built into the barrel of the gun. Screw-in chokes are generally considered to be more versatile, as they can be easily swapped out for different choke sizes and types of shooting.
While not all choke tubes are interchangeable between different brands of shotguns, there are several choke systems that do interchange (ex. Beretta/Benelli Mobil). Also, some choke brands do offer compatibility along their product lineup to fit just about any choke size or choke system.
It’s always best to check with the shotgun or choke manufacturer and consult the owner’s manual before purchasing a new choke to ensure that the choke tube will work with your specific shotgun model. And if you’re unsure if a choke tube will fit or is safe to use, have a competent gunsmith evaluate it first.
