Browning BXD shotshells are long range waterfowl loads that travel up to 1500 fps and can put dense patterns downrange for duck and goose hunting. BXD stands for Browning Extra Distance and these shells have proven to be a great choice for extending your range for those tough to bring down birds.
Several choke tubes work really well with BXD ammo. Carlson’s non-ported Cremator choke tube is the top choice when it comes to performance with flight control wads. In this review we’ll discuss the chokes that work best with BXD waterfowl ammo and go into more detail of what BXD actually is.

Best Browning BXD Choke Tubes
These are the three choke tubes you should consider using with BXD ammo. They provide dense patterns downrange and work well with flight control wads.
1) Carlson’s Cremator Choke Tube
The Carlson’s Cremator choke tube is an excellent choice for hunters who need a versatile choke that can perform well with a variety of shotshell loads. This choke tube uses a unique design that consists of multiple tapers, which work together to provide a consistent shot pattern. This makes the Cremator ideal for hunting situations where you need to be able to adjust your shooting style quickly and accurately.
Carlson’s non-ported version of the Cremator choke tube has proven to work well with BXD ammunition. This combo is capable of cleanly harvesting ducks past 40 yards. This is the top pick.

2) Patternmaster Code Black Choke
The Patternmaster Code Black is a top-of-the-line choke tube that provides unmatched performance in long-range hunting situations. This choke tube uses a specialized constriction design that helps to control the spread of shot at longer distances. This makes it an ideal choice for waterfowl hunters who need to take shots at moving targets from a distance.
The Patternmaster Code Black works well with the newer flight control wads that feature the slits on the side for extra expansion like those found in BXD loads. It’s a solid option for a good performing waterfowl choke. This is the pick for max range.

3) Mojo Fatal Shot Choke Tube
The Mojo Fatal Shot choke is designed to improve accuracy and increase lethality at long ranges. It is particularly effective when hunting waterfowl and turkey, with an optimized constriction for different shotshell loads. Its unique design includes a ported section to reduce recoil and muzzle jump, making follow-up shots quicker and more accurate. It’s a great option for hunters looking to improve their long-range shooting performance.
Fatal shot choke tubes offer similar straight walled design and performance as the Cremator and can handle just about every shot type. Mojo markets these choke tubes as being very versatile, so if you plan to hunt more than just waterfowl, give them a look.

Why the Cremator is the best choke for BXD shotshells
- Smooth bored choke works well with flight control wads
- The long-range Cremator paired with BXD gives max range with steel shot
- Steel shot is rated for Carlson’s Cremator
- Cremator choke tubes can put 80% or more pellets into a 30-inch circle at 40 yards
- Carlson’s Cremator is affordable compared to other choke tubes
What are Browning BXD Waterfowl Extra Distance Shotshells?
Browning extra distance (BXD) waterfowl loads were designed for the duck hunter needing just a little bit more range. They achieved this by increasing the speed of the shell to 1450 fps in 3 inch and 1500 fps in 3 ½ inch. They also switched to a non-traditional wad system to keep the pellets together at greater distances.
The wad is essentially a tube without the standard wad petals of most regular loads. Since the wad doesn’t open, the shot column stays together longer and increase range. 6 flight control flaps extend on the bottom of the wad in flight to slow it down and separate it from the shot.
Browning BXD Reviews
BXD ammo has been available for 4 years now and the reviews have been highly positive. It’s proven itself for extending range and delivering dense patterns past 40 yards.
Steel pellets in BXD loads are uniform and shiny, just as you would expect from premium steel loads. Perfectly round pellets help increase range and penetration at the long ranges these loads were designed for.
Types of Browning BXD Shotshells
- 12 gauge 3 ½ inch, 2 and BB shot, 1 ½ oz, 1500 fps
- 12 gauge 3 inch, 2 and BB shot, 1 3/8 oz, 1450fps
Other Browning Waterfowl ammo to consider
Wicked Blend Waterfowl loads are another option to consider from Browning. These are duplex loads consisting of 70% steel and 30% bismuth. Since bismuth is heavier than steel, the smaller bismuth pellets add both pattern density and range over that of all steel loads.
The Wicked Blend loads are available in 20 and 12 gauge loads in 4, 2, 1, and BB pellet sizes. The bismuth pellets in these loads average about 2 pellet sizes smaller than steel shot. For an alternative to BXD shotshells, wicked blend is that perfect mix of performance and affordability.
Bottom Line
Browning BXD shotshells were designed to deliver steel pellets at maximum distances past 40 yards. The flight control wad is a plastic tube without traditional petals of standard wads.
This design keeps the pellets tighter for longer, increasing downrange performance. The Carlson’s Cremator choke tube in non-ported works extremely well with BXD ammo and provides dense patterns beyond 40 yards.
BXD ammo is capable of hitting speeds of 1500 fps in the 3 ½ inch loads. This mix of large payload and speed makes it one of the best waterfowl ammo choices available right now.
